What we collect
When you create an account we store your email address, username, display name, and an optional profile image. As you participate we store the circles you belong to, the letters and responses you write (including drafts), your esteems, and your notification preferences. That is the product: a place to write to your circle, so your writing is the data.
Who can see what
Letters and responses are visible only to members of their circle, unless the circle owner deliberately marks a letter public, in which case that letter is visible to anyone. Drafts are visible only to their author. Esteems are visible only to the letter author. Circle names, topics, and descriptions on the Discover page are public.
Where your data lives
Data is stored on Amazon Web Services (DynamoDB and S3) and the application runs on Heroku. If you donate, payment is handled by Stripe; your card details go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers. Transactional email (invitations, reminders, digests, reply notifications) is delivered through our email provider.
Email we send, and how to control it
We send invitations, cycle reminders, digests, new-letter notifications, and reply notifications. You can control content notifications per circle with the bell on each circle page (no notifications, replies to your letters, or all new letters), and globally from your profile settings. Operational email tied to your membership obligations (cycle reminders) follows your participation in a circle.
What we do not do
We do not run ads, we do not use advertising trackers, and we do not sell or share your data with data brokers. We only use your data to operate Letter Circle.
Deletion and retention
You can delete your account from your profile page. Letters you deleted stay deleted; content you contributed to circles may be retained where removing it would break other members' discussions, consistent with the spirit of a shared correspondence.
Age, safety, and legal requests
Letter Circle is for people age 13 and older; accounts found to be under 13 may be closed and related content removed. We may review, remove, and preserve content when needed to enforce our Terms and community safety, including for credible threats, criminal planning, child sexual abuse material, or other unlawful activity, and we may disclose information when required by law, in response to valid legal process, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to prevent imminent harm.
